“I’ve been through a lot of changes during 2023,” states Nat Oaks. “I went to the studio still feeling quite rough about my breakup, but also didn’t want to write an inevitable sad song about it. I was super inspired by AntsLive’s hardcore, self-indulgent yet confident style and really wanted that to come through.” Her latest musical endeavour, the single “Hard To Forget,” brings references from alt-hip-hop, neo-soul, and lo-fi grounds, inspired by Loyle Carner’s earnestness, Lauryn Hill’s flow, and Frank Ocean’s lyricism.
“I do believe that you can choose how to react to different situations and either let them consume you or make you. I knew I wanted a track that I could blast out of the car speakers, and I’m happy it’s this,” she finishes. The track is intoxicating, energetic, and invites us to a complex sonic experience through Oaks’ atmospheric vocals, hard-hitting drum patterns, crisp snares, and a rich 808 kick punching through. It’s confident and unapologetic from start to finish, with an atmosphere that builds to a cinematic scale.
